The University of Pretoria is one of Africa’s oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher education. In 2013 Saint-Gobain participated in the construction of its new 250-seat auditorium. For Saint-Gobain, the key challenge was to provide an effective solution to the architect’s performance criteria for acoustics. To combine pleasing aesthetics with acoustic comfort, Saint-Gobain Gyproc provided Gyptone acoustic ceiling tiles. Their perforations, together with their acoustic tissue backing, aim at optimising sound absorption, which helps to eliminate echoes and minimise sound transmission between spaces. It also prevents disruptions from external sources, which could impact on learning. Saint-Gobain Gyproc also supplied the University with DuraLine wall systems. These high impact-resistant drywall systems were installed in the indoor cricket area. This solution is specially designed for use in areas, such as sporting facilities, that require increased robustness.
