Enhancing Sustainability and Energy Efficiency at Dembel Mall,Ethiopia

Saint-Gobain Africa supplied the Dembel Mall in Ethiopia (Addis Ababa) with SGG REFLECTASOL, a reflective solar control glass.

Dembel Mall, located in Ethiopia, is a prominent shopping destination in East Africa. With its prime location and diverse retail offerings, Dembel Mall attracts a significant number of visitors seeking a unique shopping experience. It was one of the first western-style shopping malls to open in Ethiopia. Built in 2002, it is a twelve-floor structure with 105 shops, restaurants and galleries.

To address sustainability concerns and enhance energy efficiency within the mall, Saint-Gobain Africa, a global leader in sustainable building materials, supplied Dembel Mall with SGG REFLECTASOL, an innovative reflective board. This case study explores the implementation of SGG REFLECTASOL at Dembel Mall and highlights its numerous benefits, contributing to a greener future for the region.

To provide heat resistance on the inside while ensuring a great exterior appearance, Saint-Gobain Glass provided SGG REFLECTASOL glazing.

  • This reflective solar control glass helps keep the interiors cool and reduces power consumption.
  • It can be used for external or internal use.
  • Its low light transmittance guarantees visual comfort against direct sunlight.

The combination of high light reflectance and low light transmittance provides internal privacy, even in buildings with large glazed areas. The installation of SGG REFLECTASOL at Dembel Mall has yielded remarkable results. The reflective boards have significantly reduced solar heat gain, leading to a noticeable decrease in energy consumption for cooling purposes. By reducing the reliance on air conditioning systems, Dembel Mall has achieved substantial energy savings, resulting in cost reductions and enhanced sustainability. Furthermore, shoppers can now enjoy a more comfortable indoor environment, free from excessive heat, glare, and harmful UV rays.

Bole Road, where Dembel Mall has been erected, is experiencing a major construction boom, spurred by the growing Ethiopian economy.
