Saint-Gobain Africa goes solar at four South African sites

A reliable electricity supply is essential for industrial operations, yet ongoing power generation difficulties in South Africa make this a challenge. In response, Saint-Gobain Africa has installed solar panels at four of its major plants in South Africa, addressing power supply problems and reducing its carbon emissions.

This follows the company’s renewable electricity supply agreement with French independent renewable energy producer CVE to secure approximately 140GWh of solar electricity over 20 years.

This large-scale solar energy project has been designed to cover around 40% of the electrical needs of its major production sites in Brakpan, Alrode and Germiston in Gauteng) and Parow in the Western Cape. It is an initiative that will help offset more than 6 800 tons of CO2 emissions annually.

Says CEO of Saint-Gobain Africa Othman Benjelloun-Touimi. “The rising energy costs and the pressing need to transition to cleaner energy sources inspired our partnership with CVE on this project. Together, we worked towards a solution that not only supports our business operations but also makes a positive environmental impact.”

These renewable energy initiatives are part of larger, long-term efforts to create environmentally responsible and energy-efficient industrial solutions.
